PAUL TIBBETS
Paul Tibbets was born on the 23rd of February, 1915 in Quincy, Illinois. His parents desperately wanted him to become a doctor and they sent him to the University of Florida to study medicine. However, his whole life he wanted to be a pilot. After studying medicine, he entered the USA Army Air Corps in Kentucky in 1937. During World War II, he went to England where he served as a Squadron Commander. He went back to the U.S. in 1943 where the chief of the United States Army Air Force said Tibbets was the best pilot in the entire Air Force. Brigadier General Leslie Groves, director of the Manhattan Project, chose Paul Tibbets to put together a team of men to drop the bomb on Hiroshima. Tibbets was the pilot of the Enola Gay.

Captain Robert Lewis was born on October 18, 1917 and grew up in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey. He graduated high school in 1937. Lewis was the co-pilot of the Enola Gay. A journalist from the New York Times asked Lewis to keep a log of the flight and his feelings so that he could publish it in the paper. The Journal ended up being eleven pages. In 1971 the log was sold for $37,000. The price increased to $85,000 when it was sold again in 1978. It was sold once more in 2002 at $391,000.

Thomas Ferebee was born on November 9, 1918 in Mocksville, North Carolina. He went to Lees-McRae College at age seventeen. He was very athletic and tried out for a position on the Red Sox baseball team. After being rejected, he joined the army. He went to flight school, became a bombardier, and completed over sixty successful bomb missions.

THEODORE VAN KIRK
Theodore Van Kirk was born in Pennsylvania on February 21, 1921. He is the last member of the Enola Gay that is still alive. Van Kirk joined the army in October of 1941. He flew with Paul Tibbets and Thomas Ferebee before on the "Red Gremlin". Van Kirk served as the navigator on the Enola Gay. He earned the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, and fifteen other air medals. He received his bachelor and masters degree in science.
